Mountain Cats Escape with 72-69 Win at Davis & Elkins

(Box Score) Jordan Miller (Vinco, Pa.) hit five 3-pointers and finished with 20 points, and the Mountain Cats used a 23-8 second-half run to erase a six-point halftime deficit in a 72-69 win at WVIAC rival Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Thursday. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in conference-play.
Davis & Elkins opened up a 10-4 led on Malik Tinsley's dunk five minutes into the game, then extended it to 21-12 with a basket from Ian Pinckney with nine minutes left.
The Mountain Cats answered with four points from Nick Novak (Murrysville, Pa.) and a 3-pointer by Jordan Miller (Vinco, Pa.) to cap a 9-0 run that tied the score at 21.
The Senators never let Pitt-Johnstown take the lead and outscored Pitt-Johnsotwn 10-2 down the stretch, including a tip-in at the buzzer, to go up 36-30 at the break.
The Mountain Cats outscored the Senators 7-2 to pull to within one on free-throws from Paul Weatherly (Johnstown, Pa.) and Novak to start the second half, but Davis & Elkins increased back to six at 47-41 on a P.J. Turner bucket midway through the half.
However, Pitt-Johnstown answered with a 23-8 run to build a nine-point lead of its own. Miller tied it with another 3-pointer, and Ian Vescovi (Patton, Pa.) gave the Mountain Cats their first lead of the night at 52-51, before Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) scored in the paint to give Pitt-Johnstown a 64-55 advantage with about seven minutes to play.
The Senators battled back to within one at 70-69 on Turner's lay-up and free-throw with 49 seconds remaining, and had a chance to win it, but the shot would not fall and Pitt-Johnstown turned it into an easy Novak lay-up to secure the narrow victory.
Miller had a game-high 20 points, including 5-9 from 3-point range, to lead four Mountain Cats who scored in double-figures. Novak had 14 points and six rebounds, while Weatherly added 13 points (6-7 free-throws) and seven rebounds. Grubbs rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points and six rebounds. Pitt-Johnstown also got eight points from Marc Rozanski (White Oak, Pa.).
Grubbs stands in fifth-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,511 points and third on the all-time rebounding list with 869 rebounds. Novak is 16th on the scoring list with 1,133 points and ninth on the assists list with 329, while Jordan Miller is tied with Matt Lushko for fifth on the all-time 3-point field goal list with 165.
The Mountain Cats shot 46.6 from the field, 6-14 from behind the 3-point line and 12-21 from the charity stripe. Davis & Elkins ended the night shooting 44.1% from the floor, but just 3-12 from 3-point range and 6-12 from the free-throw line.
Turner's 18 points paced four Senators who scored in double-figures. With the loss, Davis & Elkins fell to 4-8 overall and 2-8 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against Ohio Valley (WV) University on Saturday in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game a 3 p.m.
