Lady Cats Hold Off WV State, 72-70

scored a game-high 20 points, and
Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.)
hit a pair of free-throws with nine seconds remaining to help the Lady Cat basketball team secure a 72-70 WVIAC win over West Virginia State University, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown has won four straight games and improved to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the WVIAC.
West Virginia State made its first four shots and ran out to a quick 9-4 lead on Kashauna Cook's jumper 2:17 into the game.
Kayla Loughner's (Brinklow, MD)
3-pointer 2:10 later capped a 7-0 Pitt-Johnstown run to put the Lady Cats up 11-9, but the Yellow Jackets answered with a 12-4 spurt of their own to build an eight point advantage on a Cook 3-pointer with 11:34 left in the half.
Pitt-Johnstown slowly cut into the deficit and pulled to within one at 33-32 on
Inaya Stephenson's (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
short jumper at 2:09, before West Virginia State took a slim 37-35 halftime lead.
The game remained close the rest of the way.
Fratz
hit a 3-pointer two minutes into the second half to give the lead back to the Lady Cats at 41-39.
Nicole Carman's (Cleveland, OH)
lay-up and free-throw at 11:10 made it 55-51, but the Yellow Jackets battled back to tie it on four different occasions, with the last coming on Asia Greenleaf's lay-up at 4:22.
However, the Lady Cats made seven of their nine free-throws in the final 1:35, including two by
Trimarco
with nine seconds left that put Pitt-Johnstown up 71-67 and sealed the fourth straight victory.
Fratz
led all scorers and three Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 20 points.
Carman
had a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds, while
Kelsey Sleighter (Uniontown, Pa.)
scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench.
Trimarco
finished with nine points, three rebounds and four assists, and
Stephenson
had six points and four rebounds.
Pitt-Johnstown, which was out-rebounded 48-42, overcame 33.8% shooting from the floor, including just 8-25 from three-point range. The lady Cats were also 18-26 from the free-throw line. West Virginia State shot 41.4% from the field, 5-14 from behind the three-point line, and 7-8 from the charity stripe.
Jasmine Blanton led West Virginia State with 15 points and seven rebounds. Cook had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Greenlead and Sissy Wagner had 13 and 10 points, respectively for the Yellow Jackets, who slipped to 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats will host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats in the Sports Center against Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Monday at 5:30 p.m., before traveling to Davis & Elkins (WV) College for another WVIAC game on Thursday.
