Lady Cats Score 73-65 Win at Lock Haven

Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, MD)
scored a game-high 20 points, and the Lady Cats used 11 3-pointers and 16-18 shooting from the free-throw line to earn a 73-65 non-conference win at Lock Haven University on Friday. Pitt-Johnstown has won two straight after dropping its first seven to start the year.
The Lady Cats opened-up an 11-6 lead four minutes into the game on a
Rachel Johnson (Palmyra, Pa.)
basket in the paint, before Lock Haven got a short jumper from Peaches Nesmith four minutes later to cut it to 17-15.
Pitt-Johnstown responded with an 11-3 run over the next 3:22, capped by
Inaya Stephenson's (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
lay-up, to build the lead to 28-18.
However, the Bald Eagles doubled-up the Lady Cats 22-11 over the final 7:43 of the first half to take a slim 40-39 halftime advantage.
Pitt-Johnstown took control right after the break. A 3-ponter followed by a lay-up from
Fratz
4:40 into the second half put the Lady Cats back in front, 46-45. Lock Haven tied it with a free-throw from Mahogany Spence on the next trip down the floor, but Pitt-Johnstown would never give up the lead again.
Nicole Carman (Cleveland, OH)
hit a 3-pointer at the 11:05 mark to extend the lead to six. The Bald Eagles pulled to within two at 53-51 just under two minutes later, but Pitt-Johnstown maintained the lead and eventually built it to 64-57 on a
Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.)
3-pointer with 2:56 to play.
Nesmith made it a three-point game with 55 seconds remaining, but
Kelsey Sleighter (Uniontown, Pa.)
scored the final five points for Pitt-Johnstown down the stretch to secure the win.
Fratz
led all scorers and four Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 20 points.
Fratz
also grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists, while
Sleighter
finished with 14 points and three rebounds.
Carman
and
Trimarco
each had 11 points and seven rebounds, and
Johnson
grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Stephenson
tallied six points and four rebounds off the bench for the Lady Cats.
Pitt-Johnstown ended the night shooting 38.3% (23-60) from the field, including 11-23 from the behind the 3-point line. The Lady Cats also connected on 16-18 from the free-throw line. Lock Haven shot 37.1% from the floor, but just 2-8 from 3-point range and 17-32 from the charity stripe.
Nesmith led Lock Haven with 16 points and eight rebounds. Sharay Hall and Arlana Roland had 14 and 12 points, respectively for the Bald Eagles, who fell to 4-5.
The Lady Cats tip-off the second semester with a non-conferenece game against Clarion University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center, before hosting a WVIAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against West Virginia State University on Saturday, January 7 beginning at 1 p.m.
