Fratz Carries Lady Cats to Win Over Shepherd

Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, MD)
poured in a game-high 28 points to help the Lady Cats erase a six-point halftime deficit and lead Pitt-Johnstown to its first win of the season with a 67-64 WVIAC victory over Shepherd (WV) University, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats improved to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in conference-play.
The Lady Cats grabbed their only lead of the first half at 6-5 on
Nicole Carmen's (Cleveland, OH)
3-pointer four minutes into the game.
Shepherd took over with a 16-5 run over the next eight minutes to build a 10-point lead. Priscilla Moseh hit a jumper at 11:17 to put the Rams up by eight, before a Gabby Flinchum lay-up with 7:56 left in the half made it 21-11.
Pitt-Johnstown cut it to to 23-17 on a pair of
Grace Hyland (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
free-throws, but Shepherd answered with 3-pointers from Katie Biggs and Hannah Safren to rebuild its lead to 32-22 with just under a minute remaining.
The Lady Cats battled back with four free-throws from
Fratz
in the final 45 seconds to get back to within six at 32-26 at the break.
Baskets by
Carman
and
Fratz
to open the second half made it 32-30, before five straight points from the Rams extended back to seven.
Once again, Pitt-Johnstown battled back with a 16-2 run over the next 4:25 to build a seven-point of its own.
Carman
made two free-throws to tie at 37, before a conventional 3-point play from
Fratz
and a free-throw from
Rachel Johnson (Palymra, Pa.)
gave the Lady Cats a 46-39 advantage with 12:37 to play.
After Shepherd quickly pulled to within four, the Lady Cats countered to push it to 55-45 at 10:29 on
Inaya Stephenson's (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
bucket in the paint.
The Rams then outscored the Lady Cats 13-4 over the next 5:22 to pull to get to within one at 59-58 on Biggs' basket at 5:07.
Kayla Loughner's (Brinkow, MD)
3-pointer at 3:08 made it 64-58 Lady Cats, before
Fratz
made two more free-throws with 14 seconds to go to give Pitt-Johnstown the three-point win.
Fratz
led all scorers with 28 points, including 12-16 from the free-throw line.
Fratz
also pulled down five rebounds, dished out four assists, and made three steals.
Loughner
scored 11 points to account for the only other Lady Cat to score in double-figures.
Carman
had nine points and six rebounds, while
Johnson
finished with seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Pitt-Johnstown shot just 35.1% (20-57) from the field, and 7-29 from behind the 3-point line. However, the Lady Cats made 20 of their 29 free-throws. Shepherd ended the day shooting 41.7% (25-60) from the floor and 8-21 from 3-point range. The Rams were also 6-12 from the charity stripe.
Safren led Shepherd with 17 points. Emily Daniel scored 10 points and had a game-high 15 rebounds for the Rams, who dropped to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats will break for the holidays, before traveling to Lock Haven University for a non-conference game on December 30. Pitt-Johnstown will tip-off the second semester with another non-conference game against Clarion University on Tuesday, January 3 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
