Mountain Cats Suffer 80-69 Loss at #20 Bowie State

Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.)
had 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to help the Mountain Cats battle back from a 16-point first half deficit, but #20 Bowie State (MD) University rebuilt the lead to 13 in the second half to hand Pitt-Johnstown an 80-69 non-conference road loss on Thursday. Pitt-Johnstown is now 5-4.
Grubbs
scored 1:18 into the game to give Pitt-Johnstown a 4-3 lead, but Bowie State used a 24-7 run over the next 7:16 to build a 16-point advantage.
Back-to-back Jay Gavin 3-pointers put the Bulldogs up 25-11 at 12:14, before BryanWilson scored in the paint 48 seconds later to push the lead to 27-11.
However, the Mountain Cats responded in a big way.
Jordan Miller (Vinco, Pa.)
hit a 3-pointer of his own, and
Nick Novak (Murrysville, Pa.)
followed with a short jumper to ignite a 26-8 Pitt-Johnstown run to close out the first half and give the Mountain Cats a slim two-point halftime lead.
Ian Vescovi's (Patton, Pa.)
dunk at the eight-minute mark got the deficit back into single digits, but a 3-pointer by Dameatric Scott extended it back to 11 at 34-23.
Pitt-Johnstown answered again. After Ali Djim's free-throw made it 35-33 Bulldogs,
Paul Weatherly (Johnstown, Pa.)
scored off of a turnover for Pitt-Johnstown to tie it, and
Grubbs
basket with 40 seconds left gave the Mountain Cats up 37-35 at the break.
Travis Hyman scored the first four points of the second half to put Bowie State back into the lead, but
Grubb's
bucket at 14-22 put Pitt-Johnstown back up 49-45.
The Bulldogs scored the next 14 points to rebuild the lead to 10 at 59-49 on Jay Gavin's 3-pointer and free-throw midway through the half.
Bowie State extended the lead to 13 with 5:57 left and went on to hold off the Mountain Cats by 11.
Grubbs'
double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds led the Mountain Cats.
Miller
had 17 points, three rebounds, and six assists, while
Novak
added 17 points.
Bill Luther (Gibsonia, Pa.)
tallied eight points and five rebounds, and
Weatherly
finished with six points and three rebounds for Pitt-Johnstown.
The Mountain Cats shot 48% (27-56) from the field, but just 4-16 from three-point range. Pitt-Johnstown also hit 11-17 from the free-throw line. The Bulldogs ended the night shooting 50% (27-54) from the floor, 9-22 from behind the three-point line and 17-23 from the charity stripe.
Grubbs
stands in sixth-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,450 points and third on the all-time rebounding list with 832 rebounds.
Novak
is 21st on the scoring list with 1,039 points and tied for 10th on the assists list with 297, while
Jordan Miller
is eighth on the all-time 3-point field goal list with 147.
Gavin scored a game-high 26 points to lead Bowie State. Darren Clard had 20 points and seven rebounds, and Wilson chipped-in 13 points to help the Bulldogs improve to 5-1.
The Mountain Cats travel to Concord (WV) University for a WVIAC game onSaturday, before returning home to close out the first semester with a conference doubleheader with the Lady Cats against Shepherd (WV) University on Saturday, December 17. The Lady Cats will tip-off against the Rams at 1 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 3 p.m.
