Mountain Cats Roll Over Roberts Wesleyan at Gannon Classic

Nick Novak (Murrysville, Pa.)
each scored 21 points to help the Mountain Cats shoot 65% from the floor and turn a four-point hafltime lead into a 21-point second half advantage in an 82-66 victory over Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College in Friday's opening round of the Gannon University Gary Miller Classic. Pitt-Johnstown improves to 3-2 and advances to play the winner of the Daemon-Gannon game on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
After a slow start that saw the teams combine to miss their first eight shots and commit five turnovers, the Mountain Cats got six points apiece from
Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.)
and
Jordan Miller (Vinco, Pa.)
to build a 10-point lead seven minutes into the game.
Bill Luther's (Gibsonia, Pa.)
lay-up gave Pitt-Johnstown 5-0 lead, before
Grubbs
scored in the paint and
Miller
followed with a 3-pointer to put the Mountain Cats up 14-4 at 12:56.
Roberts Wesleyan answered to outscore Pitt-Johnstown 13-5 over the next 7:17 to pull to within two at 19-17 on an Alexander Herbert 3-pointer.
The Mountain Cats then rebuilt the lead to six on a
Matt Palo (North Huntingdon, Pa.)
free-throw at 1:17, before going into the halftime break leading 30-26.
Nick Novak's (Murrysville, Pa.)
fastbreak basket capped a quick 7-0 Pitt-Johnstown run to start the second half and increase the Mountain Cat advantage to 11 at 37-26.
The Raiders got the deficit down to eight Mike Stone's 3-pointer with just under 15 minutes left, but Pitt-Johnstown scored 15 of the next 20 points to build the lead to 18 and the Mountain Cats never looked back..
Grubbs

bucket at 11:40 extended the lead to 14, before another
Miller
three-pointer at 9:10 increased the lead to 61-43.
Roberts Wesleyan never got closer than 10 and the Mountain Cats pushed the lead to as many as 21 with 4:23 to play, before cruising to the 16-point win.
Grubbs
had 21 points and five rebounds, and
Novak
added 21 points and three rebounds to lead the Mountain Cats.
Miller
finished with 15 points, including four three-pointers, while
Noah Hartung (Butler, Pa.)
had five points and five rebounds, and
Luther
had five points and four rebounds.
Kevin Byer (Davidsville, Pa.)
and
Palo
also had five points each in the win.
Pitt-Johnstown, which held a 31-26 advantage in rebounding and forced 20 Raiders' turnovers, shot an impressive 64.7% (33-51) from the field and 6-14 from three-point range. The Mountain Cats were also 10-24 from the free-throw line. Roberts Wesleyan was held to just 43.9% (25-57) shooting. The Raiders hit 8-22 from behind the three-point line and 8-9 from the charity stripe.
Grubbs
moved
into sixth-place
on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with
1,378
points and and stands in third-place on the all-time rebounding list with
794
rebounds.
Novak
needs 41 points to become Pitt-Johnstown's 23rd 1,000-point scorer.
Stone's game-high 25 points and Alexander's 14 points paced Roberts Wesleyan, which dropped to 2-4 on the season.
Following the Gannon University Gary Miller Classic, the Mountain Cats will host a WVIAC doubleheader in the Sports Center with the Lady Cats against West Virginia Wesleyan College on Tuesday. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
