Lady Cats Drop WVIAC Opener to Davis & Elkins

Davis & Elkins (WV) College ran out to a 10-0 lead and held that lead the entire game in a 69-51 victory over the Lady Cats to open WVIAC play, Wednesday evening in the Sports Center.
Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, MD)
and
Kelsey Sleighter (Uniontown, Pa.)
each scored 12 points to lead Pitt-Johnstown, now 0-2 overall and 0-1 in theWVIAC.
Both teams struggled to score early, but Davis & Elkins eventually climbed out to a 10-0 lead five minutes into the game on on a lay-up and free-throw from Amy Turner, before
Fratz'
three-pointer got the Lady Cats on the scoreboard a minute later.
However, the Senators continued to build on its lead. Two Jorden Lykes free-throws with five minutes to play in the first half extended the lead to 16.
Pitt-Johnstown was able to climb back in it and cut the deficit to 37-26 on three of
Sleighter's
12 first half points just before the buzzer sounded to end the first half.
Amber Smith's (Morgantown, WV)
jumper to open the second half got the Lady Cats to within nine, but the Senators used a 16-5 run over the next 8:25 to extend the lead to 20 points. Davis Elkins scored eight of the next nine to rebuilt the lead to 16 at 45-29 on Victoria Lyles, free-throw, before Sharmaine Baker's free-throw gave the Senators a 53-33 lead at 11:25.
The Lady Cats tried to battle back.
Kayla Loughner (Brinklow, MD)
scored in the paint with 6:51 to play to get Pitt-Johnstown to within 14 at 58-44, but the Lady Cats were never able to get any closer and suffered the 18-point loss.
Fratz
and
Sleighter
each scored 12 points to pace Pitt-Johnstown.
Maria Montini (Irwin, Pa.)
had seven points, while
Rachel Johnson (Palmyra, Pa.)
and
Nicole Carman (Cleveland, OH)
finished with six points apiece.
Loughner
led the Lady Cats with five rebounds.
The Lady Cats, who were out-rebounded 48-31, were held to just 34.5% (19-55) shooting from the floor. Pitt-Johnstown did hit 8-20 from three-point range, but just 5-10 from the free-throw line. Davis & Elkins shot 38.7% (24-62) from the floor and 17-22 from the charity stripe. The Senators were just 4-23 from behind the three-point line.
Lykes ended the night with game-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Turner chipped in 13 points for the Senators, who improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference-play.
The Lady Cats travel to the University of Charleston (WV) for a WVIAC game on Saturday, before hosting a non-conference game against Lake Erie (OH) College on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Sports Center.
