Pitt-Johnstown Baseball Rolls to Home Sweep Over Columbia Union College Head Coach Todd Williams and the Mountain Cat baseball team improved to 21-11 on the season with a 19-0 and 18-1 home sweep over visiting Columbia Union (MD) College Sunday afternoon at George R. Walter Field.
Sophomore outfielder Cody Gallaher (Sidman, Pa.) led Pitt-Johnstown's offensive onslaught with a 3-for-3, five RBI performance in Sunday's opener. Sophmore outfielder Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) collected two hits, an RBI and three runs, while senior outfielder Adam Fairman (Creekside, Pa.) and freshman shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) each had two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore catcher Paul Pentz (Johnstown, Pa.) added three RBI in the victory. Senior right hander Matt Hayes (Windber, Pa.) improved to 3-1 on the year after stiking out seven and giving up just one hit and one walk in five innings of work. Freshman Zach Toth (Sarver, Pa.) struckout two in two innings of relief of Hayes.
In Sunday's second game, Gallaher banged out four more hits, drove in five more runs and scored three runs, and junior first baseman Casey Long (Johnstown, Pa.) had two hits, including his fifth home run of the season, five RBI and three runs scored. Junior catcher Josh Mearkle (Everett, Pa.) and Plummer scored three and two runs, respectively for the Mountain Cats. Senior left hander Ryan Harner (Dauphin, Pa.) gave up one run on four hits in five innings to raise his overall record to 5-1. Harner also struckout five Columbia Union hitters. Sophomore Shane Fisher (Friedensburg, Pa.) also struckout six Pioneer batters in two innings. With the losses, Columbia Union dropped to 3-7.
Pitt-Johnstown hosts Slippery Rock University on Tuesday and Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Wednesday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
