Nick Novak continued to impress as a sophomore. Novak, a Second-Team All-WVIAC choice and a two-time WVIAC Player of the Week selection, paced Pitt-Johnstown in assists (155) and free-throw percentage (90.8%) and was second in scoring (18.0 ppg.). Novak was also second on the team in field goal percentage (55.9%), third in steals (22) and tied for third in rebounding (3.6 rpg.). He finished fourth in the country in free-throw percentage, 40th in field goal percentage and 76th in scoring. In just two seasons, Novak has scored 862 points. With 138 more points, he will become the Mountain Cats’ 23rd 1,000-point scorer. Through two seasons, Novak has career-highs of 31 points against Shepherd (WV) University on Feb. 17, 2011, seven rebounds on three occasions, and 10 assists against Concord (WV) University on Nov. 13, 2010 and 10 assists against West Virginia Wesleyan College on Feb. 23, 2011.
Novak stepped into the starting point-guard position as a true freshman on his way to earning a spot on the WVIAC All-Freshmen Team. Novak finished third on the team in scoring (12.8 ppg.) and second in field-goal percentage (57.1%), steals (28) and assists (115). He also averaged 2.7 rpg. and shot 82.9% (68-82) from the free-throw line. Novak’s 57.1% (140-245) field-goal percentage ranked third in the WVIAC and 35th in the country, while his 4.1 assists per game ranked 89th in NCAA Division II. He led the team in scoring five times and assists 11 times. Novak also scored in double figures 17 times. Novak posted a single-game highs of 29 points on perfect 13-13 shooting at Shepherd on Feb. 27. He also grabbed seven rebounds at Fairmont State (WV) University on Jan. 28, 2010, and dished out nine assists against Penn State-New Kensington on Dec. 9, 2009.
At Franklin Regional High School
Novak played for Head Coach Doug Kelly at Franklin Regional High School. Novak, a 2008-09 Associated Press Second-Team AAAA All-State selection, led the WPIAL in scoring in 2008-09 at 28.8 points per game on his way to being named the Section I Most Valuable Player. As a senior, Novak averaged 28.2 points, 5.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game. He holds Franklin Regional High School’s single-game scoring record with 45 points against Woodland Hills High School. His 618 points in 2008-09 is also the school’s single-season scoring record. Novak, the 2009 WPIAL Player of the Year, was selected to play in the McDonalds Roundball Classic and Pittsburgh’s “Fabulous 5” All-Star Game. He led his team to the AAAA Section I championship and a spot in the PIAA State Playoffs.
