Kevin Byer saw action in 26 games off the bench as a sophomore. He averaged 1.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in just over six minutes per game. Byer shot 48.6% (17-35) from the field, 2-2 from behind the three-point line and 5-6 from the free-throw line. He also had seven assists, 10 steals and eight blocked shots. Through two seasons, Byer has career-highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds against Central Penn College on Jan. 5, 2011 and three assists against Penn State-New Kensington, on Dec. 9, 2009.

Byer played in 16 games off of head coach Bob Rukavina’s bench after taking a red-shirt as a freshman in 2008-09. He averaged 1.1 points, 1.1 rebounds and nearly one assist per game. Byer shot 42.9% (6-14) from the field, 33.3% (1-3) from three-point range and 66.7% (4-6) from the free-throw line. He also had four steals and four blocks. Byer recorded single-game highs of four points and three assists against Penn State-New Kensington on Dec. 9, 2009, and five rebounds against Bluefield State (WV) College on Feb. 6, 2010.
Byer, the cousin of former Mountain Cats Andy Byer and Paul Byer, played for head coach Scott Cable at Conemaugh Township High School. Byer wrapped up his high school career with 1,093 points and 480 rebounds. As a senior, he averaged 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game. Byer, a three-year letterman, was named the 2007-08 Somerset County Player of the Year and the West Pac Player of the Year. Byer poured in a career-high 28 points against Conemaugh Valley High School and led Conemaugh Township to the West Pac title and a spot in the 2008 PIAA State Playoffs. Byer also was selected to play in the 2008 Altoona Mirror All-Star Game.
