Thank you. Dr. Spectar, Ms. Murray, faculty, staff, family, friends, and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown class of 2011. It’s an honor to stand before you today to share this special occasion with you, our future leaders of tomorrow, as you close this chapter of your life and begin your new journey. To quote Leonard Sweet, “The future is not something we enter. The future is something we create.”
I hope that as you leave Pitt-Johnstown, you take with you many fond memories of time spent here. This has been your second “home” for these last few years as well as the place you chose to help you achieve your lifetime goals. Not only is it an exceptional educational institution, it is a place where your professors know you by name, your friends are forever, and snow is almost always in the forecast.
When we look at the world we live in today, it’s very difficult to find a good investment. The degree that you take with you today is one of the best investments that you’ll ever make. Your education will remain with you throughout your life and will pay lasting dividends to you and to society. As Malcom X once said, “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”
With a degree from Pitt-Johnstown, you are armed with the tools to take on “the real world”. It’s your time to show the world that you are Mountain Cat Proud and become a role model, inspiration, and mentor to the next generation.
To quote Tom Brokaw: “You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.”
As you maneuver your way through life’s twists and turns, you will be faced with choices, challenges, sorrow and joys. But, no matter where that road takes you – whether you are a teacher, an accountant, an engineer, a doctor, or a social worker, one constant will remain… you will always be a part of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown family. Our alumni can be found throughout the United States and around the world.
One of the main goals of the Pitt-Johnstown Alumni Association is to help you stay connected with your fellow graduates, as well as others who have walked this stage before you. "Patience, persistence, and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success," (a quote by Napoleon Hill). And, we do wish you a successful future.
On behalf of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Alumni Association, congratulations “Class of 2011” on a job well done! The best is yet to come. Good Luck and hail to Pitt!
