About the Esther Goldhaber Jacovitz Poetry Series Endowment
Esther Goldhaber Jacovitz, a Johnstown native, attended Pitt-Johnstown (in the days when it was known as "Junior Pitt"), the University of Pittsburgh, and Pitt law school, returning to Pitt-Johnstown to pursue coursework qualifying her to teach English in the Johnstown school system. Her daughter, Lois Ann, is an alumna of Pitt-Johnstown, as well.
Mrs. Jacovitz’ regard for Pitt-Johnstown was evident when she endowed a scholarship in 1984 to benefit students in the business program. In 2004, the former English teacher again created an endowment for the Esther Goldhaber Jacovitz Poetry Series. In creating the first and only poetry series on the campus, Mrs. Jacovitz stated, "It is important that university students be exposed to culture in its many forms. Poetry has lifelong value because you never know where its influence stops; and poetry, when it is presented as it will be in this Series, adds enrichment to a student's experience." Mrs. Jacovitz added, “All my life, I’ve been a student.”
Previous poets featured in the Series have included Mary Ann Samyn, Lynn Emanuel, Terrance Hayes, Nick Flynn, Thomas Lux, Marilyn Chin, J. Allyn Rosser, and Mark Halliday
