Carlos Cogsdell Eclipses 1,000 Points as Mountain Cats Win, 86-80,
at California (PA) Senior forward Carlos Cogsdell (Homestead, Pa.) scored 10 points to become the 15th Mountain Cat men's basketball player to reach the 1,000-point plateau on his way to helping Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Pitt Johnstown team earn an 86-80 victory at California University (PA) on Wednesday. The Mountain Cats, who shot an outstanding 66% from the field for the game, improved to 9-13 on the year.
Cogsdell, who is now ranked 15th on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,005 points, was 5-7 from the field with four rebounds. Cogsdell's 539 career rebounds also have him ranked seventh on the All-Time Rebounding List, 25 rebounds behind Quinn Harris (1988-92) for sixth place.
Junior guard Dwight Hines (Aliquippa, Pa.) led five Mountain Cats who scored in double-figures ith 18 points on 8-10 shooting from the field. Hines also grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists, while fellow junior guard Steve Scorpion (Murrysville, Pa.) chipped in 15 points, including a 7-7 performance from the free-throw line. Senior forward Paul Byer (Johnstown, Pa.) added 11 points and six rebounds, and junior guard Nick Mezyk (Johnstown, Pa.) finished 6-7 from the field for 13 points. Coach Rukavina also got six points and six assists from Joey Tutchstone (Vandergrift, Pa.) and eight points and four rebounds from freshman forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD).
Byer, who became the 14th Mountain Cat 1,000-point scorer earlier this season, moved into 11th place on the scoring list with 1,057 points. He is now 21 points shy of Chuck Bradford (1976-80) for 10th place.
The Mountain Cats, who held a slim 38-36 halftime lead, shot a season-high 66% (35-53) from the field, while holding California (PA) to 48.5% (32-66). Pitt Johnstown was also 5-9 from three-point range and held a 31-24 advantage on the boards.
Boris Mesnager and Sharif Bray each scored 22 points and Kelvin Green added 16 points for California (PA). Mesnager and Green also pulled down eight rebounds each for the Vulcans, who dropped to 13-11 on the season.
Pitt Johnstown returns home to host Indiana University (PA) on Saturday and Mount Aloysius College for Senior Night on Monday. Both games will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center. Prior to Monday's game, the Mountain Cats will recognize seniors Erik Anderson, Paul Byer, Carlos Cogsdell and Allen Robinson.
