2010 Season Preview

With just three returning seniors and only one returning junior, this year’s Pitt-Johnstown Lady Cat volleyball team hopes to improve on last year’s 11-17 overall record.  A disappointing first round loss at the 2009 conference tournament fueled the fire for Head Coach Linda Renzi (7th season) and all returners this season hoping to advance further up the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) chain.
Coach Renzi will rely heavily on returning seniors Taylor Hrescak (OH, Johnstown, Pa.), Taylor King (S, York, Pa.), and Kayla Brandle (OH, Johnstown, Pa.). Hrescak finished fourth on the team a year ago with 187 kills, while King paced the Lady Cats in assists (503) and was third in digs (177).  Brandle wrapped-up her junior season with 39 kills and 36 blocks off of Coach Renzi’s bench.
Pitt-Johnstown will also need junior Jessica Heidenthal (OH, Clymer, Pa.) to make an impact in the front line, while Kayla Petrilla (S, Johnstown, Pa.) returns for her sophomore season after collecting 421 assists and 113 digs in 2009.
In addition, Coach Renzi welcomes back sophomores Lauren Pennewill (DS, Dallastown, Pa.), Olivia Hutchinson (DS, Sinking Spring, Pa.), Kelsey Kohler (DS, Johnstown, Pa.), Lindsay Roush (OH, Johnstown, Pa.) and Casey Rottler (OH, Greensburg, Pa.).
The Lady Cats also added six talented freshmen in Ashley Dirado (MH, Greensburg, Pa.), Rachel Humble (S, Punxsutawney, Pa.), Beth Kendera (MH, Johnstown, Pa.), Kristy Lagnese (OH, Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karen Schmidt (OH, Boswell, Pa.).
“As coaches, we are looking forward to working with this year’s team and developing the chemistry necessary for a highly successful season,” Coach Renzi said.  “We have high expectations for a freshman class with great athleticism and strong potential for the future of Pitt-Johnstown volleyball.”
