Mountain Cats Roll to 77-43 Home Win Over Columbia Union
Paul Byer Notches 1,000th Career Point     The Mountain Cat basketball team raised its record to 8-10 on the year with a dominating, 77-43, victory over visiting Columbia Union (MD) College Saturday night in the Sports Center.  In the process, senior forward Paul Byer (Johnstown, Pa.) scored 12 points to become the 14th Mountain Cat men's basketball player to reach the 1,000-point plateau.  Byer reached the accomplishment in less than three seasons playing at Pitt-Johnstown.
Byer, who needed just seven points coming into tonight's game, reached the milestone with a three-pointer from the corner with 12:09 to play in the first half.  Byer becomes only the fifth Pitt-Johnstown player to score 1,000 points in less than four seasons.  He is currently 14th on the Mountain Cat Scoring List with 1,005 points, 18 points behind Josue' Nieves (1997-98, 99-00) for 13th all-time.
Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to a 13-point lead four minutes into the game and never looked back.  The Mountain Cats ended the first half with a 42-26 lead, before finishing the game with a 34-point victory.
Byer ended his night with 12 points on 4-9 shooting from the field, including a pair of three-pointers and six rebounds.  Junior guard Dwight Hines (Aliquippa, Pa.) led Pitt-Johnstown with a game-high 15 points, while senior center Carlos Cogsdell (Homestead, Pa.) added 14 points and six rebounds.  Junior guard Joey Tutchstone (Vandergrift, Pa.) chipped in eight points, a team-high seven rebounds and a career-high 12 assists in the victory.
The Mountain Cats, who swept the season-series from Columbia Union, shot 43.5% (30-69) from the field, while holding the Pioneers to just 27.6% on 16-58 shooting.  Pitt-Johnstown knocked down seven three-point field goals and 10 of their 16 free-throws.  The Mountain Cats also forced 22 Columbia Union turnovers, while committing only nine of their own.
Abdur Rahim-Scott's 11 points and game-high 11 rebounds led the way for Columbia Union.  Corey Blythe added eight points and eight rebounds and Wayne Brewster-McCarthy grabbed nine rebounds for the Pioneers, who dropped to 2-17 on the season.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Indiana University (PA) on Monday.  The Mountain Cats will return home to host the University of Charleston (WV) on Monday, February 7 at 8:00 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the Lady Cat basketball team.  The Lady Cats will host West Virginia State College at 6:00 p.m.
