#6 Wrestlers Earn, 26-9, Win at
#16 Gannon University
After six grueling matches at last weekend's NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, Head Coach Pat Pecora and the Mountain Cat wrestling team, ranked sixth in the country in the most recent NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches' Association poll, traveled to East Region rival and #16-ranked Gannon University on Friday and came away with a 26-9 victory. Pitt Johnstown took the mat and won seven of the ten bouts, including a fall by sophomore Mike Fowler (Carrolltown, Pa./Cambria Heights H.S.) over Chris Wolski to end the heavyweight match.
The Mountain Cats, now 16-5 on the season, opened the match with three decision victories by Derrek Bosso (125 lbs.) (Pequea, Pa./Penn Manor H.S.), Brandon Reasy (133 lbs.) (New Enterprise, Pa./Northern Bedford H.S.) and Jay Matteo (141 lbs.) (New Castle, Pa./Laurel H.S.). Gannon got on the scoreboard when #8-ranked R.J. Patternitti upset #4-ranked Brandon Ickes (Claysburg, Pa./Claysburg-Kimmel H.S.), 3-2, at 149 lbs. Pitt Johnstown red-shirt Eric Svec (157 lbs.) (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem H.S.) increased the lead to 12-3 by defeating Ryan Eckart, 10-4. The Golden Knights continued to battle, earning decision victories in the next two matches to cut the Mountain Cat lead to 12-9, but red-shirt freshman Mike Corcetti (184 lbs.) (Export, Pa./Kiski Area H.S.) and three-time All-American Howard Bell (197 lbs.) (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford H.S.) won by major decision and Fowler pinned Wolski at 3:55 to seal the victory for Pitt Johnstown. With the loss, Gannon dropped to 4-5 on the season.
The Mountain Cats return home to host #11 University of Findlay (OH) on Saturday, February 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
