NWCA All-Academic Wrestling Team

Six Wrestlers on NWCA All-Academic Wrestling Teams; 
Three Earn First Team Honors
     03/31/10...Six Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers have been named to 2009-10 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division II All-Academic Wrestling Teams, including First-Team selections Kyle Keane (165 lbs.) (Bradford, Pa.) and Patrick Walsh (184 lbs.) (Leesport, Pa.) and Adam Whetstone (141 lbs.) (Claysburg, Pa.).
     The 2009-10 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 133 student-athletes from 32 universities and colleges.  Thirty-six members were named to the first team, 33 to the second team and 64 as honorable mentions.  In order to be nominated for the Division II All-Academic Team, he needed to have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.  He must also be in at least in his second full year at his school, be a varsity member on his team or a key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation submitted on his behalf.
     Keane, a three-time NCAA Division II National Qualifier and a 2008 All-American, was named the First-Team NWCA All-Academic Wrestling Team with a 3.08 GPA in Business Finance.  Keane, a graduate of Clearfield High School, posted a 28-10 overall record as a senior in 2009-10.  He placed third at the Regional tournament and qualified for his third straight NCAA National Tournament.  Keane, who wrapped-up his Mountain Cat career with 99 victories, became an All-American in 2008 by placing fourth at the National Tournament.
     Walsh, a graduate of Schuylkill Valley High School, was an Honorable Mention NWCA Academic selection as a red-shirt freshman in 2007, before earning first-team honors as a senior in 2010.   Walsh has a 3.04 GPA in Secondary Education-History.  He is a three-time NCAA National Qualifier, who became an All-American in 2010 by placing sixth.  Walsh became Pitt-Johnstown’s 22nd wrestler to reach the 100-career victory mark during in 2009-10.  His 104 wins rank 19th on the Mountain Cat All-Time Win List.
     Joining Keane and Walsh on the First-Team is Whetstone, a 2009 NWCA Second-Team All-Academic Wrestling Team choice.  Whetstone, a 2009 All-American with a fifth-place finish, has a 3.11 GPA in Secondary Education-Citizenship.  Whetstone finished his senior season with a 16-7 overall record.  He was the preseason No. 1-ranked wrestler at 141 lbs.
     Dan Simon (149 lbs.) (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Zach Lundgren (157 lbs.) (DuBois, Pa.) and Myers Miller (Bolivar, Pa.) were all honorable mention selections.
     Truman State’s (MO) 3.467 overall GPA was the highest team GPA in the 17th annual Division II NWCA All-Academic Wrestling Team selections.  St. Cloud State (MN) was second (3.354 GPA), followed by Wisconsin-Parkside (3.300 GPA), Limestone (S.C.) (3.285 GPA) and Ashland (OH) (3.254 GPA).  Findlay (OH) (3.207 GPA), Indianapolis (3.198 GPA), Augustana (S.D.) (3.196 GPA), Colorado School of Mines (3.194 GPA) and Mesa State (CO) 3.174 GPA) rounded out the top-10.
     The team G.P.A. is calculated by averaging the cumulative grade-point average of ten wrestlers from each team of which eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team's NCAA II National Qualifying Tournament.
