Lady Cats Shoot 60% From Field and Cruise to 87-63 Win Over
West Liberty StateThe Pitt Johnstown Lady Cat basketball team came out Monday night and dominated visiting West Liberty State (WV) College, 87-63, in the Sports Center. Pitt Johnstown connected on a season-high 60.0% (36-60) of its shots, led by a 9-13 performance and a game-high 24 points from senior forward Melissa Patterson (Alexandria, Pa.). Patterson's 24 points and red-shirt sophomore forward Shannon Reigh's (Williamsburg, Pa.) career-high 12 points on 6-10 shooting off of Head Coach Jodi Gault's bench led five Lady Cats who scored in double figures and helped Pitt Johnstown improve to 12-4 on the season.
Coach Gault's team put this game away early. The Lady Cats jumped out to a 12-point lead midway through the first half, before ending the half with a 49-32 lead on a blistering 67.7% (21-31) shooting. Pitt Johnstown stayed hot in the second half by knocking down 15 of their 29 shots for 51.7%. The Lady Cats also out rebounded the Hilltoppers 32-22, including a 14-9 advantage on the offensive end. In addition, Pitt Johnstown made 14 of their 18 free-throws, while West Liberty State was 13-20 from the free-throw line. The Lady Cats pressure defense forced 24 turnovers and converted them into 33 points.
Patterson, who now has 925 points for her career, made five of her six free-throws, grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists. Sophomore guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) scored 18 points and had a team-high five assists and a game-high five steals, while junior center Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa.) chipped in 14 points and five rebounds. Sophomore center Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Along with her 12 points, Reigh also pulled down five rebounds.
Lena Kalvans' 16 points and Stacey Moore's 12 points and team-high five rebounds led the way for West Liberty State, which dropped to 5-7 on the year.
The Lady Cats will host California University (PA) Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in the Sports Center as part of a doubleheader with the Mountain Cat men's basketball team. The Mountain Cats will host Millersville University at 8:00 p.m.
