Historic Faculty Hiring Plan Underway

Article Body

Dear Colleagues:

I am thrilled to share with you great news about a historic faculty hiring initiative that will strengthen academic quality and shape the future of our institution.  Beginning immediately, we will launch the search process to fill a record 23 full-time faculty positions for the upcoming academic year (2010-2011), and five faculty positions for academic year 2011-2012.  This is a monumental effort towards strengthening our faculty, enhancing academic quality, investing in our core mission, and attaining our vision of being a leading institution at the forefront of baccalaureate colleges when it comes to preparing students for the Real World

This hiring initiative evolved from our New Dimension of Excellence Strategic Plan and a continuous review of our program mix, with the aim of increasing quality, responsiveness, distinctiveness, and competitiveness.  It reflects our efforts to meet traditional needs as well as to develop new programs that respond to changing student and community needs.  Through the hiring of these critical positions, we will strengthen quality and enhance the distinctiveness of our current programs as well as provide flexibility for future program development.  Pitt-Johnstown is now positioned to be competitive in several key areas of growth such as special education, energy/environmental issues, nursing, healthcare, and new mass media technology.

I would like to thank Dr. Alan Teich, the Academic Division Chairs, and other members of the Academic Council for their support in developing our faculty hiring request.  Obviously, it goes without saying that this successful initiative would not have been possible without the strong support of our colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh.  I am looking forward to an exciting, albeit challenging process, of hiring and welcoming new colleagues into our fine institution.  This is, indeed, a Mountain Cat Proud moment for the entire Pitt-Johnstown community.  Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and engagement.
