Lady Cats Defeat Shepherd 2-1 on Homecoming
09/26/09...Stephanie Szczur (Johnstown, Pa.)
and
Brittney Miller (Slippery Rock, Pa.)
each scored goals to lead the Lady Cat soccer team to a 2-1 Homecoming victory over WVIAC rival Shepherd (WV) University, Saturday afternoon at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field. Pitt-Johnstown made it two straight wins and improved to 4-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the WVIAC.
Szczur
gave Pitt-Johnstown a 1-0 lead when she took
Emily Babik's (St. Marys, Pa.)
pass and found the back of the net behind Shepherd goalkeeper Lauren Vetock fifteen minutes into the match.
The score remained the same until the 72nd minute when
Miller
finished
Lindsey Plowman's (Apollo, Pa.)
corner kick to give the Lady Cats a 2-0 lead. Shepherd's Brianna Hines got the Rams on the scoreboard with a blast past Pitt-Johnstown goalkeeper
Stephanie Paha (Slickville, Pa.)
from outside the box with three minutes to play, but that was as close as it would get.
Paha
surrendered one goal and only had to make one save to earn the win and improve to 3-3-0 for the Lady Cats, who outshot the Rams 18-8 and held a 12-2 advantage in shots on-goal. Vetock suffered the loss after giving up two goals and making 10 saves for Shepherd.
With the loss, Shepherd fell to 2-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.
The Lady Cats host a WVIAC match against Salem International (WV) University on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field, before traveling to West Virginia Wesleyan College for another conference match on Wednesday.
