Affirmative Action Policy

Goals

The goals of the University of Pittsburgh affirmative action commitment are to:

  • achieve diversity in the racial/ethnic and sex composition of its workforce at all levels;
  • enhance opportunities for enrolling, retaining, and graduating students from underrepresented groups;
  • provide accessibility and accommodation to individuals with disabilities;
  • create a campus environment free of bigotry and harassment; and
  • engage minority and women-owned businesses as vendors and suppliers.

Nondiscrimination Policy Statement

The University of Pittsburgh, as an educational institution and as an employer, values equality of opportunity, human dignity, and racial/ethnic and cultural diversity. Accordingly, the University prohibits and will not engage in discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, age, marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, disability, or status as a disabled veteran or a veteran of the Vietnam era. Further the University will continue to take affirmative steps to support and advance these values consistent with the Unversity's mission.

Historical Background

In the past, the success of equal opportunity through affirmative action was perceived to be dependend upon the enforcement powers of federal, state, and local agencies. The authority of these agencies was mandated through a variety of laws and regulations. The University's Affirmative Actions Program specifically addresses this institution's obligations under Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended; Executive Order 11246, as amended by Executive Order 11375; Revised Order No. 4; the Equal Pay Act of 1963, as amended; the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended; the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974; Titles VII and VIII of the Public Health Service Act; Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972; the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and all applicable laws and ordinances of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the City of Pittsburgh.

The University of Pittsburgh has established as its goal the implementation of affirmative action as part of its internal policies and procedures. More recently, considerations related to full access for all students have become a normal part of admissions decisions, financial aid awards, and all other areas of student affairs including student government, student organizations, academic life, and student employment.

The University Affirmative Action Committee Student Section

The University Affirmative Action Committee is a Universitywide committee, subdivided into three sections - Faculty, Staff, and Student - which acts in an advisory capacity to the President. Each section has the responsibility for evaluating the effectiveness of existing affirmative action policies as these relate to its particular sector of the University community and for recommending policies and procedures which can forward and enhance the effectiveness of the University's affirmative action program. The Student Section of the University's Affirmative Action Committee is an active and vital part of the affirmative action process. This Section works closely with all appropriate areas of student government and student affairs.
