Volleyball Picked 7th in WVIAC Preseason Poll
08/13/09...Head Coach Linda Renzi's (6th season) Lady Cat volleyball team has been picked to finish seventh in the 2009 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (WVIAC) Preseason Coaches Poll. 2008 defending WVIAC Tournament champions Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University, which also reached the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region finals last season, earned 11 of the 13 first place votes to sit atop the league's preseason coaches' poll... Pitt-Johnstown reached the WVIAC Quarterfinals last year after posting a 21-13 overall record and a 9-6 mark in conference play. Coach Renzi returns four starters from last year's team that tied for sixth in the WVIAC standings. Seniors Kristin Irwin (MH, Bellefonte, Pa.), a Second-Team All-WVIAC choice in 2008, Nicole Hauser (OH, Penn Run, Pa.), Abby Gearhart (OH, Elton, Pa.) and Kelly Miller (OH, Stoystown, Pa.) provide experience for the Lady Cats. Junior outside hitter Taylor Hrescak (Johnstown, Pa.) is another key front-line player for Pitt-Johnstown.
Last season's WVIAC regular season champions West Virginia State University earned twon first-place votes to finish second in the preseason poll. University of Charleston (WV), Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College, and Seton Hill University round out the top five. West Virginia Wesleyan College, Pitt-Johnstown, Glenville State (WV) College, Davis & Elkins (WV) College, and Fairmont State (WV) University occupy the sixth through tenth positions. Shepherd (WV) University, West Liberty (WV) University, Ohio Valley (WV) University, Concord (WV) University, and Bluefield State (WV) College fill in the eleventh through fifteenth slots.
