Required Courses
The B.S. in Biochemistry requires students to take one year each of General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, General Biology and the corequsite lab courses. During their third and fourth year students take Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry (1 & 2) and the lab, Physical Chemistry (1 semester), Inorganic Chemistry and Synthesis and Characterization lab.
Biochemistry majors take 11 to 12 credits of biology electives. Students may choose from Genetics (Biol 0350) or Cell Biology (Biol 0360) and the Lab (Biol 0361) for the second year elective. In the third and fourth year students may choose two biology electives from the following: Molecular Genetics (Biol 1137), Animal Physiology and Laboratory (Biol 1125/1225), Microbiology (includes laboratory, Biol 1185), Immunology and Laboratory (Biol 1186/1188), Plant Biology (Biol 1130/1230) and Developmental Biology (includes laboratory, Biol 1135). Students choosing the biochemistry major are encouraged to participate in undergraduate with a faculty member.
Two semesters of calculus and calculus-based physics are also required.
