Dear Graduates, Families and Friends of the Class of 2009:
                                                                                                                                     
Welcome, and congratulations to the members of our graduating class.  Today, you become part of a rich legacy that started over 80 years ago as you join our more than 18,000 alumni who are strengthening our communities and transforming our world. By your hard work and effort, you have earned a special place in the ranks of educated persons – a college graduate.  This is a milestone, a watershed event that will open up a world of possibilities for you.

You are graduating with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to successfully participate in the opportunities that you will encounter on the road ahead.  In the next phase of your life’s journey, we hope that you enjoy productive and rewarding careers, as well as meaningful and fulfilling lives in the real world.

Today, we are pleased to join you in celebration and gratitude to all of your family, friends and loved ones.  Thanks to the efforts of these people, you have achieved your dream of a college education and are poised to go out and make a difference in our communities.

Also joining in this moment of celebration and transition are the faculty and staff who welcomed you to Pitt-Johnstown not so long ago.  We were thrilled that you chose Pitt-Johnstown to pursue your education.  In the time since you joined our Pitt-Johnstown family, we have been honored to serve and support you both inside and outside of the classroom as you have developed personally and professionally.

Even as we say good-bye to you with a tinge of sadness, we are overwhelmed by a sense of joy as we welcome you into the Academy of learned persons, as well as into the larger family of Pitt-Johnstown Alumni.  Pitt-Johnstown was not simply a place for you to study, but a place where you developed lifelong friendships with classmates, faculty, and staff.  I hope these friendships will help to keep you connected to your alma mater through the many memories that you share, and that they will also sustain you as you navigate the road ahead with all the challenges and opportunities that life will surely bring.

The degree that you receive today symbolizes your efforts, courage and diligence; it also binds you to a family of lifelong learners and graduates of Pitt-Johnstown, 18,000 strong.  As you move forward in your life, please remember Pitt-Johnstown.  We are grateful that you chose Pitt-Johnstown for this phase of your life’s journey.  Pitt-Johnstown will always be a home to you.  You are always welcome.

It is indeed an honor for us to be a part of this important phase of your life.  As you graduate, robed in the majestic and time-honored garb of the Academy and brimming with hope, we wish you well as you continue your life’s journey.  Godspeed as you pursue your dreams and make a difference in the real world!
