2009 Commencement Speakers to Include International Bestselling Author

I am delighted to announce that Marci Shimoff, bestselling author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and Happy for No Reason: 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out, has accepted an invitation to speak at our 37th annual Commencement ceremony.  Ms. Shimoff will be joined on the platform by Kathryn Shadron, speaking on behalf of the Class of 2009, and Jeffrey Burtner, representing the Student Government Association.

Marci ShimoffMs. Shimoff has written six bestselling titles based on the Chicken Soup for the Soul self-help concept, which has been called the biggest self-help book phenomenon in history.  Her books have sold more than 13 million copies worldwide in 33 languages, and spent a total of 108 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. 

A celebrated transformational leader and one of the nation’s the bestselling female nonfiction authors of all time, Ms. Shimoff’s most recent book, Happy for No Reason: 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out, has been on the Amazon, New York Times and the Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, and has been translated into 31 languages. 

She is the host of the PBS special, “Happy for No Reason” and is a featured teacher in the international hit film and book, The Secret.   President and co-founder of the Esteem Group, Ms. Shimoff delivers keynote addresses and seminars on self-esteem, self-empowerment, and peak performance to corporations, professional and non-profit organizations, and women's associations. Kathryn Shadron, daughter of Albert and Chris Shadron of Ligonier, is an outstanding student-athlete who has achieved excellence both academically as a business/accounting major and as a member of the Pitt-Johnstown dance ensemble and women’s volleyball team.  An active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Mountain Cat Maniacs, and Habitat for Humanity, Ms. Shadron received the Emglo Accounting Award and Faculty Senate Student-Athlete Award at this year's Academic Honors Convocation.  Additionally, she received the Campus Association Rosella Blackington Award for Outstanding Senior Student.   She has accepted a position with Maher Duessel Certified Public Accountants in Harrisburg.
Jeffrey Burtner (President, Student Government Association)
Jeffrey BurtnerJeffrey Burtner, son of Jeff and Chari Burtner of Lower Burrell, is a junior political science major, with a minor in French.  Mr. Burtner will deliver remarks on behalf of the students.
