Baseball Sweeps at Ohio Valley at Point Stadium
02/28/09...Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.) pitched five hitless innings to lead the Pitt-Johnstown baseball team to an 8-0 win over Ohio Valley (WV) University in Saturday's opening game of a doubleheader at the Point Stadium. The Mountain Cats completed the sweep with a 3-2 win in the nightcap behind 12 strikeouts and five more scoreless inning from Ben Watkins (Johnstown, Pa.). The Mountain Cats are now 4-0.
In the opener, Fleck struckout seven and didn't allow a hit in five innings of work to improve to 2-0 in the Mountain Cats 8-0 win. Billy Wasko (Bethel Park, Pa.), Joe Novotny (Johnstown, Pa.), Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) and Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) combined to strikeout four and give up just one hit the rest of the way. Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa) collected two hits.
In game two, Watkins fanned 12 and gave up just three hits in five scoreless innings on the mound in Pitt-Johnstown's 3-2 victory. Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) earned his first win of the season after pitching 1.1 innings in relief of Watkins and Chuck Boring (Dilltown, Pa.). Boring surrendered two runs in the sixth inning, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with two of its own runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Matt Petrwosky (Johnstown, Pa.) tripled and drove in a run, while Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) and Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) collected one hit and an RBI each.
With the sweep, Ohio Valley dropped to 0-8 on the year.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Fort Pierce, FL for the annual Spring Trip from March 7-11. The Mountain Cats will also play at Salem International (WV) University on March 14, before hosting Salem International on Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m. at Johnstown's Point Stadium.
