Aden Leads Lady Cats Over Wheeling Jesuit;
Lindsay Cale Five Points From 1,000
02/14/09...Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Lady Cats shot 58.3% in the second half to break open a halftime tie and hand Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University a 68-59 loss in the Sports Center, Saturday evening on Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) added a dozen points to move to within five points of 1,000. Pitt-Johnstown snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 14-9 overall and 12-4 in the WVIAC.
Lindsay Stuckey's layup at 12:39 gave Wheeling Jesuit an 11-5 lead, but the Lady Cats used an 8-2 run to tie the score on Cale's free-throws 2:49 later. The Cardinals rebuilt the lead to six with 5:08 remaining. Pitt-Johnstown battled back again. Andrea Dalton's (Washington, Pa.) three-pointer with 2:02 left cut the deficit to 30-29, before Dalton added a free-throw with :44 seconds to tie the score 30-30 at the half.
The Lady Cats carried their first half momentum into the second half. Qiuana Brown's (Monroeville, Pa.) three-pointer to start the half gave Pitt-Johnstown a lead it would never give up. The Lady Cats extended it to 47-39 on Monae Baker's (Bushkill, Pa.) layup with 10:19 to play. The Cardinals cut the deficit to 53-50 with 5:07 left, but Pitt-Johnstown recovered. Cale's bucket gave the Lady Cats their largest lead of the night at 66-54 with :35 on the clock, before going on to the nine-point victory.
Aden's 15 points on 5-9 shooting from the field and 5-8 from the free-throw line led all scorers. Cale chipped in 12 points, while Baker and Dalton added 11 points apiece to round out the double figure scorers. Baker and Dalton also pulled down seven and six rebounds, respectively. Coach Sasha Palmer also got eight points from Brown and seven points and eight rebounds from Jamie Gennett (Davidsville, Pa.).
With her 12 points, Cale now has 995 for her career. Cale needs five points to become the 31st Lady Cat to reach the 1,000-point mark.
Pitt-Johnstown finished the night shooting 54.5% (24-44) from the field, while holding Wheeling Jesuit to just 29.9% (20-67) shooting. The Lady Cats, who were out rebounded 37-36 and overcame 22 turnovers, were also 4-11 from three-point range and 16-23 from the free-throw line. The Cardinals hit 6-20 from behind the three-point arc and 13-17 from the charity stripe.
Stuckey scored 13 points, and Shayla Holenka chipped in 12 points and six rebounds to pace the Cardinals, who fell to 10-12 overall and 6-10 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Ohio Valley (WV) University on Thursday in the Sports Center, before traveling to Fairmont State (WV) University on Saturday. The Lady Cats will tip-off Thursday's games at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
