#7 Wrestlers Hammer Seton Hill 41-3
02/11/09...Pitt-Johnstown got falls from Scott Morgan (125 lbs.) (North Huntingdon, Pa.) and NCAA #3 Shane Valko (133 lbs.) (Windber, Pa.) to open the match, and the NCAA #7 and East Region #2-ranked Mountain Cat wrestlers cruised to a 41-3 victory over East Region #14 Seton Hill University, Wednesday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown made it four straight wins and improved to 12-4 on the year.
Morgan got things started with a fall over Josh Testa at 6:01 to put the Mountain Cats up 6-0. Valko, now 20-1 overall and 13-0 in dual meets, followed with his team-leading 13th fall when he pinned Nick Nichols at 4:13. Adam Whetstone's (Claysburg, Pa.) 16-1 technical fall over Dallas Evans as time expired in the 141-lb. bout made it three straight wins for Pitt-Johnstown and pushed the score to 17-0.
The Griffins broke the streak with a decision at 149 lbs. Josh Voelker used a takedown with :04 remaining in the third period to erase a 4-3 deficit and defeat Nathan Link (Cresson, Pa.), 5-4.
It was all Mountain Cats the rest of the way. At 157 lbs., Ryan McIntyre (Claysburg, Pa.) scored a 9-1 major decision over Guy Dedola, before Zach Lundgren (Dubois, Pa.) increased the lead to 24-3 with a 7-4 decision over Quade Miller at 165 lbs.
East Region #1 Steve Makin (Portage, Pa.) used a late takedown in the second period to tie the score, before adding four more points in the third period to defeat Logan Downs, 7-3 at 174 lbs. The Mountain Cats built the lead to 30-3 when Matt Moore (Blairsville, Pa.) broke a scoreless tie with an escape to start the third period en route to a 2-0 victory over Dan Matthews at 184 lbs.
Pitt-Johnstown closed out the match with and set the final score at 41-3 with wins in the last two bouts. Patrick Walsh (Leesport, Pa.) ranked #2 in the East Region, earned a 16-0 technical fall over Ron Oswald at 5:00, and Chris Dempsey (Sewickley, Pa.), ranked #4 in the region, made quick work of Steve Zubach, securing a pin at :57 in the heavyweight bout.
With the loss, Seton Hill dropped to 4-11.
The Mountain Cats will wrap-up the 2008-09 regular season with Senior Night against #20 Shippensburg on Wed. Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m. Atlantic Broadband will broadcast the Shippensburg match on a tape delay basis on channel 14 in the Johnstown market and channel 9 in the Altoona market.
