Mountain Cats Take Care of Charleston, 87-70
01/26/09...Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 21 points and Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) added 19 points to lead a Mountain Cat attack that saw all five starters score in double figures in an 87-70 victory over the University of Charleston (WV), Monday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown, which held a 29-point second half lead, made it three straight wins and improved to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the WVIAC.
It didn't take the Mountain Cats long to climb in front. Charleston held 6-5 lead 2:44 into the game. Pitt-Johnstown used a 19-8 run to build a 24-14 advantage, capped by Danny Branch's (Washington, D.C.) jumper with 9:25 remaining. William Sharpe's (Johnstown, Pa.) layup 4:18 later gave the Mountain Cats their largest lead of the first half at 33-15, before Pitt-Johnstown took a 38-26 halftime lead.
Charleston pulled to within 40-30 on Erik Armstrong's dunk at 18:42. Pitt-Johnstown answered with a 26-7 run over the next 6:31, highlighted by 12 points from Davis in the stretch, to build a 66-37 lead and put the Golden Eagles away. Charleston managed to narrow the gap to 13 points with 3:48on the clock, but the Mountain Cats went on to cruise to the 17-point victory.
Davis' 21 points on 7-9 shooting from the field, 3-3 from three-point range and 4-4 from the free-throw line led all scorers. Davis also grabbed five rebounds, while Tullis finished with 10 points on 9-11 shooting and eight rebounds. Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) collected a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sharpe and Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rounded out the Mountain Cats who scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Ionadi had six rebounds and a game-high nine assists to go along with his 10 points.
Tullis currently ranks ninth on the Pitt-Johnstown scoring list with 1,233 points. Tullis is five points away from Mike Gresik (1981-85) for eighth place on the scoring list. Davis is tied with Dwight Hines (2002-07) for 12th place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,145 points), eighth on the rebounding list (517 rebounds) and eighth on the all-time assist list with 303. Davis needs two points to tie Don Elzer (1973-77) for 12th place place on the scoring list. He is also 39 rebounds shy of Carlos Cogsdell (2001-05) for eighth place on the rebounding list and 28 assists away from Joey Tutchstone (2003-06) for seventh place on the assists list. Sharpe stands in fifth place on the assist list with 413, just five assists shy of J.J. Schumacher (2002-04, 2005-07) for fourth place.
The Mountain Cats, who held a 39-27 advantage in rebounding, improved on Saturday's 61% by shooting 63.5% (33-52) on Monday. Pitt-Johnstown was also 4-11 from three-point range and 17-24 from the charity stripe. The Mountain Cats held the Golden Eagles to 40.0% (28-70) shooting, including 9-25 from behind the three-point arc.
Anthony Anderson and Dexter Morris scored 15 points apiece, and Erik Armstrong chipped in 12 points for the Golden Eagles, who fell to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats travel to Salem International (WV) University on Thursday, before hosting a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against Seton Hill University on Saturday. The Lady Cats tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
