#11 Wrestlers Cruise to 28-12 Win at Gannon
01/18/09...Scott Morgan (125 lbs.) (North Huntingdon, Pa.) and Matt Moore (174 lbs.) (Blairsville, Pa.) each recorded falls to lead the #11-ranked Mountain Cat wrestling team to a 28-12 victory at East Region rival Gannon University, Sunday afternoon and complete a weekend sweep in Erie, Pa. Pitt-Johnstown, 6-3 on the year, opened the weekend with a 31-6 victory at #9 Mercyhurst College on Saturday.
Morgan got the Mountain Cats rolling with a fall over Chris Santucci at 1:17, before Shane Valko (Windber, Pa.) increased the lead to 12-3 with major decision over Ethan Swope at 133 lbs.
Gannon answered to pull within 10-6 with decision victories at 141 lbs. and 149 lbs. A.J. Milanak scored a 7-4 win over Adam Whetstone (Claysburg, Pa.) at 141 lbs., and Kevin McElhaney defeated Ryan McIntyre (Claysburg, Pa.) 9-6 at 149 lbs.
Pitt-Johnstown won the next three bouts to take a 22-6 lead. Mazen Kholi (Allentown, Pa.) dealt Brandon Monin an 8-5 loss at 157 lbs., and #1-ranked Kyle Keane (Bradford, Pa.) followed with a 5-4 decision over Bret Terry at 165 lbs. Moore wrapped up the three straight wins by pinning Dave Mosinski at 3:38.
After Gannon's Jacob Tazzi slipped by Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) 3-2 at 174 lbs. to pull the Golden Knights to 22-9, the Mountain Cats sealed the win when Patrick Walsh (Leesport, Pa.) was awarded a forfeit victory at 197 lbs.
Pitt-Johnstown led 28-9 entering the heavyweight match where Frank McGrath defeated Chris Dempsey (Sewickley, Pa.) 8-4 to set the final at 28-12 in favor of the Mountain Cats.
With the loss, Gannon dropped to 3-2 on the season.
The Mountain Cats travel to the 2009 East Region Duals at St. Andrews Presbyterian (NC) College on Friday and Saturday, before returning home to host nationally-ranked Ashland (OH) University on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
