Cale's Lay-Up With :13 Lifts Lady Cats Over Fairmont State 
     01/10/09...Lindsay Cale's (Hummelstown, Pa.) driving layup with :13 to play broke a 58-58 tie and gave the Lady Cat basketball team a 60-58 victory over Fairmont State (WV) University, Saturday evening in the Sports Center.  Pitt-Johnstown has won five straight games and improved to 6-5 overall and 4-0 in the WVIAC.
    
Fairmont State jumped out to a 15-7 lead on Cara Waybright's three-pointer with 11:22 in the first half, before the Lady Cats outscored the Lady Falcons 13-5 over the next 8:30 to take a 20-19 lead on Cale's layup.  Gabby Gattuso's pair of free-throws with 1:02 to play tied the game 23-23, but Pitt-Johnstown closed out the first half on a 5-0 run, capped by Sheena Aden's (Sandy Lake, Pa.) three-pointer from the top of the key with :05 on the clock, to give the Lady Cats a 28-23 halftime lead.
     Fairmont State used  a 6-0 run to take a 29-28 lead on Samantha Wanichko's layup 2:19 into the second half.  The teams battled back-and-forth until the Lady Falcons opened up 45-39 lead with 10:59 to play.  Once again, Pitt-Johnstown responded and took the lead 46-45 with 9:09 to play on Jamie Gennett's (Davidsville, Pa.) three-pointer.  Fairmont State regained the lead 56-52 at the 3:37 mark, but Pitt Johnstown continued to claw its way back and took the lead for good on Cale's layup with :13 left.  The Lady Falcons had a chance to send the game to overtime, but Guttuso's jumper from the top of key key rimmed out as time expired.
     Aden led Pitt Johnstown with 16 points on 7-13 shooting and a game-high nine rebounds.  Gennett had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Cale finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.  Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) rounded out the Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds.
     The Lady Cats ended the night shooting 45.5% (25-55) from the field, 3-12 from three-point range and 7-12 from the free-throw line, while Fairmont State shot 43.6% (24-55), 4-13 from behind the three-point line and 6-10 from the charity stripe.  Pitt-Johnstown also out rebounded the Lady Falcons 38-27, including holding a 10-5 advantage on the offensive end.
     Gattuso led all scorers with 28 points and six rebounds.  Ashley Vavrek added 14 points and six reboudns for the Lady Falcons, who slipped to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the WVIAC.
     The Lady Cats travel to West Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday, before hosting WVIAC doubleheaders in the Sports Center against Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Thursday and Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Saturday.  The Lady Cats will tip-off both doubleheaders at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's games at 7:30 p.m.
