Lady Cats Open Season With Loss to LeMoyne at Kutztown Classic
11/15/08...Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, but LeMoyne (NY) College broke open a five-point halftime lead en route to a 70-52 victory over the Lady Cat basketball team to open the 2008-09 season in the first round of the Kutztown University Golden Bear Classic, Saturday afternoon.
LeMoyne, which held a 37-32 halftime lead, opened the second half with a 12-4 run, before outscoring the Lady Cats 33-20 in the second half.
Aden finished the day shooting 5-14 from the field and 4-5 from the free-throw line, while senior guard Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) was the only other Lady Cat to score in double figures. Cale had 10 points on a pair of three-pointers and four free-throws. Head coach Sasha Palmer also got six points apiece from Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) and freshman Taylor Griffith (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) and five points and five rebounds from Qiuana Brown (Monroeville, Pa.). Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, and Jamie Gennett (Davidsville, Pa.) and Dalton grabbed six and five rebounds, respectively in the loss.
Pitt-Johnstown out-rebounded LeMoyne 56-41, but struggled shooting the ball from the filed, hitting just 17-61 (27.9%) and 2-15 (13.3%) from three-point range. The Dolphins ended the day shooting 40.7% (24-59) from the field. LeMoyne also forced 25 Lady Cat turnovers.
Venessa Holden scored a game-high 16 points to lead four Dolphins who scored in double figures. Brittany Davis (13 points), Courtney Coryea (10 points) and Katie Dunn (10 points) rounded the double figure scorers. Coryea also had a game-high 10 rebounds to help LeMoyne improve to 1-0.
The Lady Cats will take on Kutztown on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. to wrap-up the tournament, before tipping-off the WVIAC conference schedule at Seton Hill University on Wednesday. Pitt-Johnstown will make its 2008-09 home debut on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2:00 p.m. against Shippensburg University in the Sports Center.
