Women's Soccer Holds on For 3-2 Home Win Over Lake Erie
09/10/08...Head Coach Jim Herlinger's Lady Cat soccer team built a 3-0 halftime lead over visiting Lake Erie (OH) College on Wednesday, and held on for a 3-2 victory to improve to 2-2-0 overall. Junior forward Alicia Zack (Irwin, Pa.) scored a goal and added two assists to help Pitt-Johnstown to its second straight win.
Kristin Kelly (Bethel Park, Pa.) opened the scoring with her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the eight minute off of assists from Zack and Brittney Miller (Slippery Rock, Pa.). The Lady Cats increased the lead to 2-0 in the 16th minute when Zack set up sophomore Lauren Penn (Plum, Pa.), who beat Lake Erie goalkeeper Chelsea Gieson on a one-touch in the box. Pitt-Johnstown then closed out the first half scoring when Zack tallied a goal of her own in the 35th minute with a blast from the top of the box. Kelly collected the assist to give the lady Cats the 3-0 lead.
Lake Erie battled back with goals in 47th and 74th minutes to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Pitt-Johnstown was able to hold on for the win.
Lady Cat goalkeeper Stephanie Paha (Slickville, Pa.) faced five shots, gave up a pair of goals and made two saves to earn the victory and improve to 2-0-0. Gieson saw 22 shots and made five saves, but suffered the loss.
With the loss, Lake Erie dropped to 1-3-0 on the season.
The Lady Cats travel to Lock Haven University for a non-conference match on Monday, before returning home to host a WVIAC match against Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Saturday, September 20 at 3:00 p.m.
