Volleyball Earns Split to Open Season at Gannon Tournament
08/30/08...Head Coach Linda Renzi got 17 kills, three block solos and three block assists from junior middle hitter Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) to open the 2008 season with a split at the Gannon University Tournament on Saturday. After suffering a 3-games-to-1 loss to Gannon, the Lady Cats rebounded to sweep Lake Erie (OH) College 3-0.
Pitt-Johnstown dropped an 18-25, 25-19, 10-25, 18-25 to Gannon, before defeating Lake Erie 25-19, 25-18 and 25-23.
Irwin and junior outside hitter Nicole Houser (Penn Run, Pa.) each had seven kills in the loss to Gannon. Setters Merissa Larrew (Irwin, Pa.) and Taylor King (York, Pa.) added 16 and 10 assists, respectively, while senior defensive specialist Katie Shadron (Ligonier, Pa.) finished with 21 digs.
Irwin then collected 10 kills, three block solos and three block assists to lead the Lady Cats in the sweep over Lake Erie. Houser, Kayla Lape (Fishertown, Pa.) and Taylor Hrescak (Johnstown, Pa.) all chipped in seven kills apiece. Larrew and King combined for 29 more assists, and Shadron had 16 more digs.
Pitt-Johnstown will open the 2008 WVIAC schedule at home against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Sports Center, before traveling to the Davis & Elkins (WV) College Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
