LADY CATS BEAT OHIO VALLEY
IN 2004-05 HOME OPENER The Lady Cat basketball team made it three straight wins with a 72-56 victory over Ohio Valley (WV) College in Monday night's 2004-05 home opener in the Sports Center. Pitt Johnstown opened up a 28-point lead on sophomore guard Allison Krischer's (Johnstown, Pa.) lay-up with 6:32 to play in the first half, before taking a 45-20 lead to the locker room for halftime. Senir forward Melisson Patterson's (Alexandria, Pa.) lay-up with 10:53 to play in the game increased the Lady Cat lead to 29 points. Ohio Valley continued to battle, but it wasn't nearly enough and Pitt Johnstown came away with a 16-point victory.
Patterson and junior center Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa.) each scored a game-high 18 points, while Krischer tallied 11 points, six rebounds and six assists, and sophomore forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) chipped in 10 points. Conner and Patterson also had six and five rebounds, respectively.
The Lady Cat defense held Ohio Valley to just 37.0% (20-54) shooting from the field, while Pitt Johntown connected on 45.2% (28-62) of their shots. Pitt Johnstown was also impressive from the free-throw line, hitting 14-15 (93.3%), led by Conner's 6-6 performance. However, the teams combined for just 4-20 shooting from behind the three-point line. The Lady Cats forced 25 Fighting Scots' turnovers and made 14 steals to help the team improve to 3-1.
Caley Stevens led Ohio Valley with 13 points and Candice Gist added 10 points and five rebounds. Stacy Mielecki scored six points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Fighting Scots, who dropped to 0-2 on the year.
