James Fallon to be 2003 Commencement Speaker
Article Body
I am pleased to announce that Mr. James Fallon (Class of 1977) will be this year’s commencement speaker. Mr. Fallon is the editor of Women’s Wear Daily, the premier newspaper covering the women’s fashion and retail industries.
A Johnstown native (Richland High School, 1973), Mr. Fallon received a B.S. in Journalism in 1977 from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. On a full academic fellowship to Stanford University, he went on to obtain a M.A. in Journalism in 1978.
Mr. Fallon began his career in 1978 serving as a copy editor at the Johnstown Tribune Democrat. In 1979, he joined Fairchild Publications as news editor in its 35-person Washington, DC, bureau. He then was appointed bureau chief for Fairchild’s two-person office in London in 1981, a position he held for the next 20 years. At that time the company published 18 business papers covering women’s, men’s, and children’s fashion; footwear; sporting goods; home furnishings; textiles; food retailing; metals; machine tools; electronics; cable television, and information systems. Mr. Fallon contributed business articles from London to all of these Fairchild publications. He also interviewed writers, actors, socialites, members of the royal family, and business people, including such public figures as Michael Caine, the late John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson, Guy Ritchie, Cate Blanchett, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Williams, the Duchess of Devonshire, the Duke of Westminster, Martin Amis, Anthony Burgess, V.S. Prichett, Ruth Rendell, P.D. James, Roald Dahl, Julian Barnes, Anthony Powell, and Michael Herr.
In the fall of 2001, Mr. Fallon was appointed editor of the 92-year-old newspaper, Women’s Wear Daily, which has a daily circulation of 150,000. Fairchild Publications also publishes consumer magazines W, Jane, and Details, in addition to ten newspapers and magazines covering fashion and retailing.
The University of Pittsburgh Class of 2003 will be fortunate to meet an alumnus who has gone on to an international business leadership role.
