President's Award for Excellence in Service 2002
Article Body
Each year since 1999, the President's Award for Excellence in Service has been presented to a staff member who goes above and beyond normal job requirements to provide excellent service. The award recognizes the staff member's dedication to the university and commends that employee's superior effort.
The 2002 President's Award for Excellence in Service was presented to Mrs. Betsy A. Goenner, President’s Office. Betsy was recognized at the annual staff luncheon on December 18th. The honoree was awarded a certificate, a $1000 cash award, and an engraved mantle clock with the University seal.
Previous winners were: 1999-Shirley Richards, Library; 2000-Nancy Brunberg, Natural Sciences; 2001-Victor Kohler, Physical Plant and Sharon Wilson, Social Sciences.
Faculty and staff members submitted their nominations (including the names of individuals who could support the nomination) to a special committee chaired by Robert Knipple, President of the Staff Activities and Concerns Association. The committee then reviewed each nominee and made their recommendations to the president. The committee members represented four cabinet areas: Bruce Haselrig, Student Affairs; Victor Kohler, Budget and Administration; Dolores Berkey, Institutional Advancement; and Sharon Wilson, Academic Affairs. Each year the candidates recommended by the committee are exceptionally strong, thus, determining a winner is always difficult. I am very grateful and indeed fortunate to have a talented and dedicated staff serving the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, its students, and many friends.
According to the committee, a staff member chosen for the President's Award for Excellence in Service is a person who goes out of the way to accommodate students, who is active in the community, and who serves as a role model to other employees. The winner this year certainly embodies the spirit of service at UPJ to which we all aspire.
Congratulations, Betsy Goenner! Thank you for your dedication to our University and for your excellence in service.
