The renovation of the Owen Library is tentatively scheduled to begin in early November. The actual start date will be determined by contractors' bids, which are due by September 18, and by the financial approval of the Commonwealth. If the submitted bids are within the state's budget, we anticipate that the project will be awarded by October 10. Renovations are expected to take 18 months to complete.

This August, UPJ signed a lease agreement providing off-campus retrievable storage space for the library's core collection and furniture. Library users may employ either a Storage Retrieval Request form or the Call-Slip electronic option to obtain materials from storage. Twice a day, Monday through Friday, the library staff will travel to the storage facility to retrieve requested materials. Additional storage area for print shop materials has been constructed in the Physical Plant Building.

A temporary operating library and a temporary print shop will also be situated on campus during the renovation. Preparations for the temporary facilities have already begun, including trenching and conduit for electrical services, conduit for data and telecommunication, and water and sewage lines run to the site. In addition, a roadway and connecting sidewalk have been prepared for access to the temporary facilities. The method of roadway construction will allow it to be seeded over and concealed when the project is complete. During the renovation, the temporary facilities will house the library's public service desks (Reference, Circulation, and Course Reserves), public workstations for catalog and database access, staff offices, and a core reference and core periodical collection.

Because of space constraints, study areas in the temporary library facility will be limited. However, UPJ will provide students with designated academic areas in other campus facilities.

The Owen Library renovation project includes:

--asbestos abatement throughout the building
--roof replacement
--HVAC upgrades
--data connection upgrades
--a new and larger elevator
--new carpet
--new lighting
--entrance/exit modifications for ADA compliance
