President Announces Excellence in Teaching Award

Article Body

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Ronald G. Reinbold, Associate Professor, German, is this year's winner of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Reinbold on his recognition as an excellent classroom teacher and innovator.

Dr. Reinbold holds the B.A., M.Ed., and the Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He joined the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown faculty in 1968 and is Associate Professor of German in the Division of Humanities.

Dr. Reinbold is an active and valuable member of many divisional and campus-wide committees. He is Director of the Foreign Languages Laboratory and coordinates foreign language testing for freshmen placement. During the summer of 2000, Dr. Reinbold escorted forty-five people to Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Additionally he was instrumental in hosting the APPLES Foreign Language Festival during the month of March in both 2000 and 2001.

Dr. Reinbold is held in high esteem by both colleagues and students, as a dedicated, creative, and energetic teacher. He makes every attempt possible for each class member to learn and to excel. Ron builds rapport with each class and with each student. He offers encouragement and constructive criticism, always challenging students to reach their potential. His approach to teaching is engulfed with enthusiasm. His energy spills over to the entire class, making it virtually impossible to resist being an active participant. Ron's enthusiasm is supplemented by effective methods, such as thought-provoking questions, role-playing and other hands-on activities which help to create a positive environment for all students.

The following quotations were excerpted from student evaluations and are typical comments about Dr. Reinbold's teaching:

German I
This class was excellent. Everyday he would go over new, as well as, old material, verbally quizzing us and helping us to understand everything. I learned a lot these past few months.

I always looked forward to this class the most. I left feeling that I had either learned something new or had made an old idea more clear in my mind. I never walked away feeling lost or confused about any of the material we have covered.

German II
I was certainly challenged to think and be on my toes intellectually.

Learning German has been interesting and a lot of fun. Dr. Reinbold made this subject entertaining. I feel it has been worthwhile.
