The Pitt Johnstown Lady Cat basketball team, under 23rd-year Head Coach Jodi Gault, tipped off the 2004-05 season with heart breaking 70-68 loss at Clarion University Tuesday night. A very young Pitt Johnstown team, with just one senior on the roster, battled the Golden Eagles to the final horn until Clarion's Heather Sigich hit a jump shot as time expired to break a 68-68 tie and give the Lady Cats a very disappointing two-point loss.
Sophomore guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) led all scorers with 23 points, including 14 points in the first half to help Pitt Johnstown to a 38-36 halftime lead. Krischer, who shot 8-11 from the field and 3-3 from behind the three-point line, also dished out a team-high seven assists. Senior forward Melissa Patterson (Alexandria, Pa.) scored 17 points with three three-point field goals and junior center Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa.) scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Lady Cats. Sophomore forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds in the loss.
Both teams battled back and forth, with Pitt Johnstown holding the largest lead of the game by nine points with 2:53 to play in the first half. The Lady Cats shot 45.6% from the field for the game and hit six of their eight three-point field goal attempts, while the Golden Eagles finished the game shooting 45.8%, but were 0-8 from three-point range. Clarion also outrebounded Pitt Johnstown 45-33.
