Baseball Picked to Finish Fourth in WVIAC and Second in Northern Division
01/30/08...Head Coach Todd Williams' Mountain Cat baseball team has been picked to finish fourth overall and second in the Northern Division when the 2008 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coaches' Preseason Poll was released on Wednesday. West Virginia State University is once again favored to win the conference crown, while Shepherd (WV) University is picked in the top spot of the Northern Division.....
(WVIAC Press Release)
West Virginia State was the top pick on 6 of the 14 ballots returned by league head coaches. Concord (WV) University earned three first place votes, while Shepherd and Pitt Johnstown got two nods each for the number one position. Alderson-Broaddus received the final vote for the top position.
After playing a conference schedule last season, the Mountain Cats, who will host the WVIAC Baseball Tournament in conjunction with the City of Johnstown at the Point Stadium, are eligible to compete for a league title in 2008. Pitt Johnstown posted a 20-18 overall record and a 12-5 record playing in the WVIAC South a year ago. The Mountain Cats return six starters and their top-two starting pitchers in junior
Chuck Boring (Armagh, Pa.) (5-2, 5.87 E.R.A.)
and senior
David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.) (3-1, 3.66 E.R.A.)
. Offensively, Pitt Johnstown will be led by senior shortstop
Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) (.341 1 HR 29 RBI)
, sophomore third baseman
Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) (.438 1 HR 19 RBI)
, and junior first baseman
Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) (.386 7 HR 41 RBI)
.
The WVIAC Baseball Championship moves to Johnstown's Point Stadium. The May 2-4 event is a six-team event with the top two finishers in each of the three divisional races. West Virginia State is the defending champion and this season's winner earns a spot in the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional Tournament.
