Contests for our Humanities Writing Awards are held annually. The six awards, several with cash prizes, honor the best in UPJ student writing.
The Poetry Club allows students to celebrate and share poetry in a relaxed, supportive environment. Some students enjoy attending Poetry Club just to listen. All are welcome. Next year the club plans to give a few public readings and attend poetry readings in Pittsburgh and elsewhere. See the bulleting board in the stairwell of Biddle Hall and contact
Professor Alessandra Lynch
for more details.
Backroads, our student run literary magazine, offers a forum for students’ original poetry, fiction, and non-fiction essays. For more information, contact upj_backroads@yahoo.com
Golgonooza
is the Spring Student Play Festival, featuring one-act plays written, directed, and acted by students. A faculty committee selects four or five plays, usually from those written for the Playwriting class offered each Fall.
The Esther Goldhaber Jacovitz Poetry Series, held every spring, provides students with the opportunity to hear emerging writers of national reputation read their work.
The Bottle Works Reading Series, held in downtown Johnstown and cosponsored by our Writing program, offers students the opportunity to hear local and regional writers.
The Advocate is UPJ's weekly student newspaper. Writing majors and minors are often reporters and editors for the paper.
The Open Stage is held throughout the year at the on-campus Log Cabin. All are welcome to come and read creative work, play music, or just listen.
