Mission / Vision Statement

At the Personal Counseling Center, counseling excellence is our standard, not our goal

It is imperative that the mission of the Personal Counseling Center comports with the mission of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Since the Personal Counseling Center functions within the UPJ Division of Student Affairs, it is therefore incumbent upon this office to support the primary mission of the Student Affairs Division.

The mission of the Personal Counseling Center is to foster an environment that supports the academic mission of the university. This is operationalized by pursuing these strategic initiatives:

Identify and resolve problems and situations which negatively impact the academic growth and development of our students through personal counseling.

Provide educational programming designed to address the developmental needs of our students.

Encourage student participation in the university community, including its planning and governance.

Provide consultation to the campus community which serves to enhance the quality of students’ educational experience at UPJ.

The Personal Counseling Center defines itself as being a provider of psychological support services. Professional staff assists students in making their personal/social and academic experiences as successful as they can be. Importantly, this service delivery is NOT like that provided by a mental health treatment center. The Personal Counseling Center is NOT a mental health clinic. We are located within an educational institution and not within a community based out-patient mental health treatment center. Personal Counseling Center policies and procedures reflect this critically important operational distinction.
