Guidelines

The Pennsylvania Geographer publishes papers on a wide variety of geographic themes, and invites authors to submit manuscripts. Issues are organized around preannounced themes, but papers dealing with other scholarly topics will also be considered for publication.

Articles should be sent to William B. Kory, Editor, Gregory E. Faiers, Associate Editor, or Ola Johansson, Associate Editor, The Pennsylvania Geographer, Geography Department, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Johnstown, PA 15904. Book reviews and software reviews should be sent to Donald Buckwalter, Geography Department, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, PA 15705.

Articles submitted for publication in the Pennsylvania Geographer will be evaluated for appropriateness and scholarship through a peer review process. To be considered for publication, manuscripts must conform to the following requirements, adopted by the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Geographical Society:

• Deadlines for submitting materials are February 15 for the SPRING issue and August 15 for the FALL issue.
  
• Articles of any length will be considered. Book and software reviews should be approximately 1-3 pages in length. Manuscripts should be typed on one side of 8 1/2" x 11" white paper, double spaced with adequate margins. Papers should be adequately referenced and carefully edited before being submitted. For each manuscript, provide a title page including the title of the work, the name and affiliation of the author (or authors), and the name and address to which correspondence should be directed. Articles should be accompanied by abstracts of not more than 150 words.
  
• Three copies of the manuscript should be submitted.   Citation of references must conform to the style found in current issues of the A.A.G.'s Professional Geographer. Use parenthetical notation of author and date in the text, and provide complete citation of sources at the conclusion of the article, titled "Literature Cited."  In addition to the 3 copies, include a copy of the manuscript on a disk or CD in Microsoft Word or Word Perfect format.
  
• All graphic illustrations, including computer generated maps and graphics, should be done in black and white, and should be of a high quality, suitable for reproduction. Number illustrations on the back. On a separate sheet of paper, indicate placement in the text and appropriate captions. Some limited reduction of black and white photos, tables, charts and maps can be done at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, for originals of no more than 8" x 10".
  
• Copies of all manuscripts, maps, photos, etc. should be made by the author before mailing. Manuscripts, maps, charts, photos and other illustrations may not be returned.
  
• Every manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter in which the author affirms that the paper will not be submitted elsewhere until an editorial decision has been received from The Pennsylvania Geographer, and that a similar version of the manuscript has not been published or accepted for publication elsewhere.
  
• The Editors and the P.G.S. Board members assume no responsibility for opinions and statements expressed by contributors.
