Service Organizations

Service organizations are special interest organizations which are important to us at UPJ! Each service organization is unique in its goals, events and membership requirements.

BEST BUDDIES

The aim of this group is to promote awareness and understanding about individuals with mental disabilities.  Individuals in this organization plan events and interact with family members and group homes within the community to provide activities for young adults and adults with mental disabilities within the Johnstown area.

BLACK ACTION SOCIETY (B.A.S.)

Black Action Society was founded in 1968. B.A.S. sponsors a number of programs and activities throughout the year. It's primary objectives are to:

  • Develop and stimulate the interests of ALL STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF RACE
  • Meet the cultural, political, educational and social needs of ALL students

Past activities include:

  • Bowling parties
  • Dances
  • Guest speakers
  • Performing artists
  • Picnic for new students
  • Sepia Fashion Revue (annual fashion show)
  • Skating
  • Soul Food Fest during Homecoming

CIRCLE K

Circle K is associated with Kiwanis International and is dedicated to serving both the University and the community. The objective of Circle K is to:

  • Outlet for students to express concerns to help others
  • Provide students with a means to help others and do community service

COLLEGE REPUBLICANS

This organization works to stimulate in young people an active interest in governmental affairs, to promote friendship and cooperation among Republicans, to increase the efficiency of popular government, to foster and perpetuate the ideals and principles of the Republican Party, and to represent Republican students at UPJ.

DANCE ENSEMBLE

The purpose of the UPJ Dance Ensemble is to promote further the appreciation of dance as an art form. The group performs one dance production during the spring term.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS SOCIETY

E.A.S. promotes environmental awareness and understanding and organizes community-wide environmental events. EAS's activities include:

  • Sponsor field trips for students and faculty
  • Sponsor guest speakers who work in environmental fields

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

The purpose of Habitat for Humanity is:

  • Build modern, but adequate housing for the community of Johnstown
  • Witness the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world

The group's secondary purpose is to educate the community of Pitt Johnstown by making aware the need to volunteer time for the greater need of the less fortunate.

PITTSBURGH JAPANESE ANIME CLUB (PJAC)

The purpose of PJAC is to establish on the UPJ campus a means to watch anime in an open, social atmosphere.  PJAC is committed to exposing and encouraging all members of UPJ to the arts and stories that can be found in all genres of anime.  We also promote the awareness of Japanese culture through all forms of media related to anime.

UPJ ALLIANCE

UPJ Alliance is a student organization and a service to the UPJ community to provide education, resources, and support for the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered) community and their straight-allies on the UPJ campus.  We welcome anyone and everyone at our meetings and events regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

UPJ COLLEGE DEMOCRATES

UPJ College Democrats works to promote political awareness on the UPJ campus and in the Johnstown community through volunteer activities and sponsoring political speakers and events on campus.

UPJ COLORGUARD

The guard provides learning and performance opportunities in indoor Colorguard for University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown students.  The goal of the group is to work together, create, and learn a full show to perform and be judged in front of an audience.

UPJ FRENCH CLUB

This club was created to increase the awareness of French and Francophone countries. More students now are involved in learning the French language.

UPJ SPANISH CLUB

This club was just recently established in the Spring of 2007.  The purpose of this club is to provide students interested in Latin American and Spanish culture the opportunity to study in an informal setting and to improve their understanding and overall comprehension of the language.
