Pitt-Johnstown named Johnstown native and Richland High School graduate Jim Herlinger head women’s soccer coach and head women’s track & field coach prior to the start of the 2008-09 school year.
"I am excited about getting the opportunity not only to work with the Pitt-Johnstown women's soccer program and the athletic department, but also returning to the Johnstown area,” Herlinger
said after being named to the position. “To me, it has always been home."
Herlinger began his coaching career at Pitt-Johnstown in 1974 as an assistant coach to Clyde Horner with the men's soccer team after graduating from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. One year later, Herlinger took over the reins of the program when Horner focused on developing the Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball program.
Herlinger left Pitt Johnstown in 1976 and returned to Slippery Rock to pursue his master's degree in Physical Education and assist Hall of Fame soccer coach Jim Egli.
Herlinger, a 1970 graduate of Richland High School, has more than 25 years of coaching experience on every level from recreation and travel clubs to the high school and college levels. He started boys and girls high school programs in both Virginia and North Carolina and was one of the co-founders of the first youth soccer program in the Greater Johnstown area. That program developed into Region 142 of the AYSO. Collegiately, Herlinger was the head soccer coach and men’s athletic director at Wheeling (WV) College from 1981-83, the assistant head coach at Division I Appalachian State (NC) University in 1980-81 and an assistant coach at Gannon University from 1984-86.
In 2004, Herlinger
stepped out of coaching when asked to take over an administrative role as Testing Coordinator at a high school in North Carolina.
Two years later, Herlinger moved back north to assist with the care of his aging parents. Richland High School’s football field, Herlinger Field, was named after his late father.
Herlinger
has two grown sons, Logan and Gabriel, who both reside in Pittsburgh.
