Women’s Basketball to Host Lady Cat Classic on Saturday and Sunday
Head Coach Sasha Palmer
and the Pitt Johnstown Lady Cat basketball team will play host to the 2009 Lady Cat Classic, Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the Sports Center. On Saturday, Slippery Rock University will take on Lake Erie (OH) College at 1 p.m., followed by Pitt-Johnstown battling Georgian Court (N.J.) University game at 3 p.m. The Classic will wrap-up on Sunday with Georgian Court playing Slippery Rock at 1 p.m. The Lady Cats will play Lake Erie at 3 p.m. This year's event is sponsored by Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn and Cummings Trophies & Engraving...

Lady Cats Battle #21 IUP, before Falling 63-61

Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.)
poured in 20 points, but No. 21 Indiana University (PA) answered every Pitt-Johnstown run and dealt the Lady Cat basketball team a 63-61 season-opening loss, Sunday afternoon in the Sports Center.
Lacey Claar's
second straight three-pointer pushed IUP out to a 15-2 lead 4:30 into the game.
Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.)
and
Dalton
combined to score 15 points over the next 11 minutes to help Pitt-Johnstown battle its way back into the game. The Lady Cats eventually took a 27-26 lead on
Katie McBroom's (Derry, Pa.)
lay-up at the 3:54 mark, but the Crimson Hawks closed out the first half on a 7-2 run to take a 33-29 halftime lead.
IUP extended the lead to 41-36 on Sylvie Tafen's foul line jumper nearly five minutes into the second half, before the Lady Cats used a quick 5-0 run to knot the score at 41 on
Baker's
lay-up with 13:39 to play.
Dalton's
three-pointer gave Pitt-Johnstown a 46-45 lead at 9:01. The Crimson Hawks answered and rebuilt the lead to eight points on another Claar three-pointer with 4:54 remaining. Once again, Pitt-Johnstown responded to cut the deficit to 59-57 on
Dalton's
fourth three-pointer of the day at 2:57, but IUP was able to hold on down the stretch for the two-point victory.
Dalton's
20 points on 8-15 shooting from the field and 4-7 from behind the three-point line led three Lady Cats who scored in double-figures.
Maria Montini (Irwin, Pa.)
and
Baker
each scored 10 points.

Dalton
each pulled down five rebounds, while
Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.)
chipped in nine points and three rebounds.
Eryn Withers' 20 points led IUP and matched matched
Dalton
for game-high. Tafen added 17 points and five rebounds, and Claar had 16 points, including four three-pointers. Hillary Shope grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and Kierstin Filla dished out a game-high nine assists for the Crimson Hawks, who improve to 1-0.
Prior to tip-off, the Lady Cat basketball program and the Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Department had a moment of silence and dedicated the 2009-10 season to former Lady Cat standout
Jody Billingsley (1990-1994)
, who was an unfortunate victim of the L.A. Fitness Center shooting outside Pittsburgh in August.
Billingsley
, a native of Utica, Pa. and a graduate of Franklin Area High School, was 37.
