South Asian Review

Welcome to the online home of the South Asian Review

South Asian Review , the refereed journal of the South Asian Literary Association, is a representative international scholarly forum for the examination of South Asian Languages and Literatures in a broad cultural context.

The journal is published four times a year: the Special Topic issue (June/July); the Regular issue (October); the Creative Writing issue (November); and the Conference issue (December).

The Special Topic issue focuses on a single topic, but invites a wide variety of scholarly thought and dialog within that particular context.  The 2007 Special Topic issue, 27.1, was devoted to Empire and Racial Hybridity.  The upcoming Special Topic issue, 28.1, is devoted to Imagining South Asia.

The Miscellany, or Regular, issue invites healthy and constructive dialogue on issues pertaining to South Asia but the thrust of the dialogue must be literature and the sister arts.  Particularly in this issue, the journal is open to all ideas, positions, and critical and theoretical approaches.  The journal welcomes essays in intercultural, comparative and interdisciplinary studies in the humanities.  The journal is also interested in essays on music, painting, sculpture, architecture and other related fields.

The Creative Writing issue is the newest addition to the SAR publications.  The South Asian Review will publish a special issue devoted exclusively to creative writing in all genres.

The Conference issue is the publication for the annual conference of the South Asian Literary Association which contains abstracts for those papers presented at the conference.  The 7th annual SALA conference--held December 26-27, 2006--was focused on Postcolonialism and the South Asian Diasporas.  The subject of the upcoming 8th annual SALA conference is Social Justice in South Asian Cultural Practices.  This event will be held December 26-27, 2007, and proposals of 200-300 words are currently being accepted.  Please visit the USACLALS website for more information and to view the Call For Papers:  http://www.usaclals.org/.

The journal welcomes analytical and critical articles of 15-25 pages, double spaced (must be prepared in the MLA style and accompanied by a brief abstract and biographical note).  Articles must be original and hitherto unpublished.  Electronic submissions should be sent to upjsar@pitt.edu.  Hard copies are accepted, but there must be three printed copies and another copy saved to an IBM compatible diskette.  Articles may be on any aspect or period of South Asian literature--ancient, pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial.  The following areas are of special interest to the journal:
